Want to improve your spoken English but don’t have a lot of extra time? Try this 2 minute English pronunciation practice. I use it with students in the Pronunciation Pro training program. Do it consistently and you will hear the difference.
A 2-minute English pronunciation practice you can do today
Set a timer for two minutes. That is the whole session.
- Pick one sentence you actually say at work. Write it down.
- Say it once at a talking speed. Record it.
- Say it again slowly. Finish every last sound.
- Say it a third time and give the important words a little more length.
- Listen to the first recording. Mark one word that slipped. That word is tomorrow’s two minutes.
You do not need a new list every day. One sentence, one missed sound, two minutes. For more daily habits, see daily English pronunciation exercises and 10 helpful tips for mastering English pronunciation.
How do I change my accent?
You can sound clearer in American English. You learn the sounds and the rhythm. First you learn to hear the difference between how you say a word and how an American coworker says it. Then you train your mouth to make that new shape.
Hearing comes first. Mouth movement comes second. If you only repeat without listening, you practice the old habit. If you only listen without speaking, nothing changes in the meeting.
Hear it, then move your mouth
Play one American audio of your sentence if you have it. Or use the recording you just made and compare it to how you wish it sounded. Then move the mouth bigger on the hard word: stretch “ee,” put the tongue on the teeth for “th,” finish the last consonant.
Rhythm matters as much as the vowel. If the beat is flat, see learning American English rhythm.
Keep the two minutes boring on purpose
Do not add a 20-word list because the timer felt easy. Repeat the same sentence tomorrow. When that last sound holds, pick a new sentence. That is how two minutes adds up.
A good work sentence: “I’ll send the report on Friday.” Listen for send, report, and the last sound of Friday. If one drops, that is the only thing you fix tomorrow.
