Today I want to share a pronunciation tip that will help you be more clear and confident in your spoken English.

I call it the 3 Stressed N’s Rule.

But first, let me explain why this rule works.

American English rhythm is all about stress patterns.

A pattern of stressed and unstressed words and syllables is what creates the rhythm of English.

Native English speakers are familiar with this pattern and are expecting it when you speak.

A stressed word or syllable is said longer, louder, and with more emphasis. This stress patterns tells a native speaker which words are important in your message.

Now, there are 3 types of words that are usually very important information and need to be stressed or emphasized so they are clearly understood by your listener.

These are the 3 N’s:

  1. Names: of people, places, or things.
  2. Numbers: all numbers
  3. Negatives: words such as no, don’t, can’t, won’t, not, never, etc.

When saying these kinds of words you’ll want to slow down, say it louder, and with full pronunciation.

As you do you’ll make it much easier for your listener to follow what you are saying, you’ll have more success in your interactions with native speakers, and you’ll build greater confidence in your ability to communicate effectively in English.

Give it a try, I know it’ll make a big difference for you.
