I got an email from a student yesterday with this phrase…

“I’m not a very confident person”

I know I’ve heard some form of this statement from students before but for whatever reason this one stopped me.

I felt the pain she must be feeling as she tells herself this story.

In her head this is a statement of fact. She has found evidence to support it so it feels very real to her.

To me, it’s simply a thought she has chosen. It’s a story she has told herself long enough that now she believes it.

What if that story were not actually true.

What if she chose this thought…

“I am a very confident person”

What if she repeated that story in her head.

Would she find evidence in her life to support it?

How would that change the way she saw herself?

Would she feel different?

Would she show up with more confidence? Would she speak up more?

I think so.

What stories are you telling yourself?

Remember that it is your choice. I encourage you to choose confidence.
