As the youngest of nine kids, I have always been most comfortable as a quiet observer. I do not like the spotlight. It still makes me laugh that my face is now on Pronunciation Pro videos.
Are you scared like me?
When I first started, I tried to stay in the background. A mentor told me to get in front of the camera and talk to students as a real person. She was right. I told my mom on the phone: I know this is the work I am supposed to do, and if the camera is part of it, that is what I have to do.
Facing the spotlight anyway
Years later I still do not love the spotlight. I am not as scared of it. Because I got uncomfortable, I have been able to help students find their voice and step into their own. That is not easy. It is worth it. For more on moving while you are still afraid, see courage cannot erase our fears.
