I am currently reading the book ‘The Happiness Advantage’ by Shawn Achor for our Pro Book Club Meeting coming up next week. (Register Here)

In it, the author talks about what happens in your brain when you are happy.

You’ve probably heard of the brains fight or flight’ response when it comes to being scared.

Well, it turns out that the brain has another type of reaction when it’s happy.

Researchers have labeled this response ‘broaden and build’.

Studies now show that when the ‘happy chemicals’ (Serotonin and Dopamine) are released into the brain then you are better able to:

  • Organize new information
  • Retrieve information faster
  • Remember information longer
  • Make and create more connections
  • See & invent new way of doing things

It turns out that positive emotions expand your thinking which leads to better results (like improving your spoken English).

So my question for you is…

How can you have more fun while speaking English?

Instead of thinking of speaking English as heavy, fearful, and serious…

What if it were light, exciting, and fun?

It’s possible, let’s practice…

1. Take a minute and think about what you love about speaking English.

2. Now think about positive relationships you’ve created because you speak English.

3. Think about the positive experiences and opportunities you’ve had because you’ve learned this language.

How does it feel in your body to think positively about speaking English?

Practice those thoughts and better yet, write those thoughts down.

And the next time you’re feeling worried or insecure about speaking English, think about those positive experiences.

Flood your brain with ‘happy chemicals’ and you might be surprised at how much more fluent you sound and especially how much more confident you feel.
