Last week I hosted a Pro Book Club Meeting for our amazing Pro Community on the book ‘Give & Take’ by Adam Grant.

The discussion and insight from our Pro Community was incredible. We have such an amazing collection of sharp and ambitious professionals who are so wise and have unique perspectives. There’s nothing that gets me more excited than to hear you share your voice and your valuable ideas.

Throughout the discussion it was clear that our Pro Community are GIVERS.

What do I mean by GIVERS?

Well, in Adam Grants book he talks about 3 different styles of personalities.

  1. Takers want to make sure they get their fair share of the “pie”
  2. Matchers want to make sure everyone gets equal shares of the “pie”.
  3. Givers want everyone to have as much of the limitless “pie” as possible.

Now, as we learned in the book it’s actually wise to be a taker and matcher in certain situations but when your dominate style is to give, you are most likely to achieve long lasting success.

Qualities of a GIVER include (but are not limited to):

  • Share the credit
  • Shift their perspective to understand others
  • See colleagues as allies, not obstacles
  • Genius makers – Bring out the best in others
  • Create an atmosphere of psychological safety
  • Work as a team player

If this sounds like you then you are on track for incredible success in your life and career AS LONG AS YOU DON’T fall into these 3 traps…

3 Traps for GIVERS

  1. Too trusting
  2. Too empathetic
  3. Too timid

This was my big AH-HA moment of this book. I often fall into these 3 traps which can weaken my superpower of giving.

But being aware of these 3 traps has helped me bring more power to my giving tendency and it can for you too!
