I’ve been reading the book ‘Grit’ by Angela Duckworth this month as part of our Pro Book Club Meeting.
There have been so many incredibly concepts I’ve learned that I’m excited to discuss with you and our Pro Community, but one concept really jumped out to me that I wanted to share.
It’s the concept of ‘deliberate practice’.
This concept explains why some people excel in certain skills and others do not.
The author gave the example that if skill is developed by consistent practice, then why hasn’t she improved in her running?
She’s been running every day since she was in High School (about 20 years) but she isn’t any faster.
The expert she was speaking with said, “You’re not improving because you’re not doing deliberate practice”.
He then went on to explain the requirements for deliberate practice:
- A clearly defined stretch goal
- Full concentration and effort
- Immediate and informative feedback
- Repetition with reflection and refinement
Deliberate practice is what we do here at Pronunciation Pro.
You have the clearly defined stretch goal of speaking English clearly and with confidence.
How are you doing with the rest of the requirements?
Do you need more help to practice deliberately?
I want you to succeed.
If you’re struggling to accomplish your stretch goal I want to know.
I’m here for you.
