1. Meet & Greet

If you’ve studied English for some time now, you probably already know how to introduce yourself. Still, there’s always room to generate more conversation during a simple meet and greet.

If you’re from a different country, you can talk about why you moved, for example. Or, you can talk about what you like most about your job or your hobbies.

Then, turn the conversation around and ask questions like:

  • Why did you move here? Do you like living here? Why or why not?
  • What do you like most about your job?
  • What is your typical day like?

It never hurts to keep building your confidence with basic introductions. After all, this is the stepping stone for building new relationships.

2. The Weather

Talking about the weather is one of the most simple dialogues you can have with strangers. The weather is easy to talk about. But here are some questions you can ask to make the conversation more interesting:

  • What is your favorite/least favorite season and why?
  • What was the weather like last week?

If you’re advanced in English, these questions may be too easy.

If so, talk about which climates you prefer to live in. Do you like places with four seasons or places where it’s always hot or cold?

3. Technology

Technology plays a big part in all our lives, which is why talking about it makes for great conversation. Here are some questions you can ask to start conversations about technology:

  • What kinds of gadgets do you own?
  • Do you use social media?

For more advanced speakers, ask and answer questions like:

  • In what ways does technology make life easier/more difficult?
  • Does technology hurt relationships? If so, how?

Keep the conversation about technology going! Talk about ideas for future technology with the person you practice with.

4. Television & Movies

We live in the golden age of television. Between Netflix, Hulu, and regular T.V, there’s a television show for everybody. The same goes for movies.

Naturally, talking about movies and shows makes for great English dialogues for students. To challenge yourself and make things more interesting, talk about the following questions:

  • What is your favorite performance of all-time by an actor/actress? Why
  • What is the best television show? How does it compare to other shows?
  • Which movies are you most looking forward to?
  • What’s a plot you wish would be made into a film?

If you practice a dialogue with someone who doesn’t watch TV or movies, ask them why they don’t. Better yet, open up the conversation and ask them about the things they enjoy doing instead.
