As a foreign student in the US, you may face financial challenges (the average cost of an MBA is $40,000) or even extreme culture shock. Despite these challenges, the post-secondary education system in America is among the best. The US is home to 8 of the top 10 universities in the world.

Every year, students from all over the globe flock to the U.S. seeking degrees, from undergraduate to doctoral levels. The process is a bit of a challenge.

The American Dream is one shared by those all over. If you dream of attending a U.S. graduate school, make that dream a reality. Here are 3 tips for getting accepted into the graduate school of your dreams.

Any foreign student can accomplish their dream of attending a u.s. graduate school!

1. Make Sure You Know English

The U.S. can be a bit rough when it comes to knowing the language. Americans expect everyone to know English.

Not only will all your courses (except for foreign language courses) be in English, but you will need to be able to order coffee from the cafe down the street. You will need to be able to read, write, and speak English as though it is your native language.

Unless English is your native language, you will need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The exception to this is if you completed your undergraduate studies from an American institution.

2. Get Your Documents in Order

Applying for any educational opportunity will require a great deal of paperwork. Applying for graduate programs in the U.S. is no exception.

First, you will need to make sure you are prepared for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Try to take it no more than two or three times.

Then, you will need to make sure you have the proper recommendations and transcripts. Along with every transcript from every institution you’ve attended, you may need to include a transcript evaluation. This will be used to equate your previous coursework to U.S. standards.

Finally, you will need to refine your statement of purpose. Have a native English speaker look it over.

3. Apply for a Visa ASAP

If you are planning on going to school in the United States, you will need to apply for a student visa. This will be an F-1 non-immigrant visa.

You will need to show proof of sufficient funds and attend an interview at your local U.S. embassy.

If you are Canadian or Bermudian, you won’t need to apply for a visa. Instead, you will need to get an I-20 certificate of eligibility. Certain fees will apply.
